The idea for a foundation came about a year ago when
I met with Daytona Beach Police Chief Michael
Chitwood and Gordon Wasserman. During the
conversation, we talked about changing technology
and the inability to keep up with those changes due
to budgetary constraints.
And so, the Daytona Beach Police Foundation was
formed. The foundation has a diverse group of
individuals who will work to bridge relations
between the community and our local law enforcement.
The DBPF has been established as a nonprofit,
tax-exempt organization. The funds collected will
enable the foundation to purchase much-needed
equipment, and will also allow the Daytona Beach
Police Department the opportunity to share and
exchange with other local law enforcement agencies.
The foundation, with the assistance of Chief
Chitwood and the Daytona Beach Police Department,
has identified key equipment needed in order to
combat crime. Local police agencies will also
benefit, as we have mutual concerns. The equipment
will be shared as the need arises so that crime can
be combated not only locally, but also within
Volusia County.
The Daytona Beach Police Foundation is governed by a
board of trustees and is not part of any local,
state or federal government. It is affiliated with
The Community Foundation, a division of United Way
of Volusia & Flagler Counties.
The foundation's first-year goal is to raise
$100,000.
The 2007-2009 Daytona Beach Police Foundation Board
of Trustees are: chairman Bob Davis, vice chair Bud
Ritchey, secretary Karen Gamble, treasurer Kathy
Milthorpe, at-large George Mirabal, at-large Ray
Salazar, fundraising chairman Bill McMunn, marketing
and promotions chairman Frank DeMarchi, and needs
and assessments chairman Frank Heckman.
Additional foundation members are: Carla Quann,
Felix Amon, John Doctor, Ed Williams, Bob Williams,
Larry Kelly, Steve Erlanger, Derek Triplett, Bob
Lloyd, Tim Stockman, Jim Rose and Rose Ann Tornatore.
